3rd Quarter Writing Unit: How to Books

We have emptied out our writing folders as we finished up the narrative writing unit. We will now be focusing on How to Books. We have begun to explore how to books and notice how authors write How To books. We also went through the steps of making "peanut butter and jelly" sandwiches to write a class book on How to Make Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches.  During this unit we will be brainstorming ideas for our books: Things we know how to DO, MAKE, AND BE! We will be talking about transition words: First, second, next, last etc and how those words help us teach the reader exactly what to do! We will also be reinforcing using sight words, spaces between our words, starting with a capital letter and ending with punctuation.

Informational Books (Non Fiction)

To go along with our How to Books, we will also be reading many informational books. We will be practicing comparing and contrasting informational books, talking about the facts we have learned from reading these books and noticing how informational books are written (they include facts, headings, diagrams with labels, maps etc.) When reading informational books at home, talk with your child about what they have learned and noticed about the books.

New IPad App!!

I came across this sight word app the other day and I LOVE IT! I have not had a chance to download it on our classroom ipads yet, but I know the class will love it! It is called Sight Word Ninja. It is played just like Fruit Ninja, except you have to slice the sight word. Here is what I like best about it: you can choose which sight words to pop up on the screen!!!! This way you can choose the words that your child is working on. There is a long list of sight words, but our 20 can be found in the kindergarten and preschool lists. If your child already can read and write our 20, you can add more to their list!

A Look into the Week

Monday will be OSU day! Wear your Ohio State spirit gear to support a winning Ohio team!

Scholastic Book Orders: I will not be sending out any flyers this month, new flyers will be out the beginning of February! I still will be placing an order by next Friday the 16th. If you would like to still order books, you can online!

Ideas to Work  on at Home

Math: We will not be sending home a new Math Calendar for this month. We are still working on the same skills as December (counting, math facts, story problems). Continue to review December's calendar or other past calendars as needed!

Language Arts: Continue to work on our 20 sight words. If your child has already mastered these sight words, move onto the bonus words. To mix things up a little, have your child use one of our 20 sight words in a sentence or build a sentence with our both our 20 and the bonus sight words and record it on paper or a white board. We are practicing using a capital at the beginning of a sentence, spaces between our words and ending with punctuation. Don't forget to check your child's backpack for the Book Buddy Bag! Have your child read the book in their bag every night. The book may be either a book from our guided reading time or a book they have chosen. Remember RAZ Kids and Storia are also great resources for leveled and other interest books!

Upcoming Dates

No School this Friday (1/16) & Monday (1/19)

Back to School!

I hope everyone had a great holiday and a relaxing break! It was so exciting to hear all about it today! We only have 2 weeks left in this quarter! I can't believe the school year is just about halfway through! For the next 2 weeks we will be reviewing our reading comprehension skills: compare/contrast, character, setting and retelling! You can practice these at home by asking your child questions while reading together!
